is there any way in highlevel code to modify the screen buffer properties?

the win32 console?

check out http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms682073(VS.85).aspx

tons of useful winapi functions to play around with the console

maybe you need SetConsoleScreenBufferSize or somesuch
