IRC Channel

Postby ReiKo on Mon Jun 29, 2009 9:13 am

Hello people,

I was just wondering as our community here is geting stronger - maybe we should get some IRC channel to meet up instead of this AJAX Java chat? And maybe we should exchange Skpye and MSN contacts to learn easier. You know, its much easier when two brains are involved in something :) or more hah :D

Anyway, please get me some feedback on this, I would love to get in contact with other people who learn C++ and our "teachers" like users "antiRTFM" and "C++" :)

Thanks.

IRC would be cool, but I'm not very familiar with it. I just learned how to get the Firefox add-on last week. Although I'd prefer IRC to giving my skype/msn contact info just for privacy.

Well, Chatzilla is great addon for Firefox that enables you using IRC from Firefox.

Enjoy.

We should settle what server and chanell we would use? I presume we are not so bigg community (yet! :)) to get ourself our own server but we can use some other servers like #quakenet etc.

I'd suggest we use irc.freenode.net so that while having fun in our own channel we can also familiarize ourselves with the crowd of professional programmers in the ##C++ channel

You have any suggestions for name of the channel?

Also, is there way to implement IRC screen of that server into this forums so that users can one-click and be online on IRC?

Well, I think I've seen on some other phpbb-based forums there is option to include IRC applet like AJAX on this forum - so users don't need to install Firefox plugins or desktop application to use IRC.

What do you say #C++spoonfeed ? Any other suggestions? We also need people if we want this to work :?

Well an IRC channel is a good idea, were it not that it has been tried by antiRTFM and me.
We reserved a channel named #Cpplus on irc.freenode.net at that time.
Most of the time it was just me and antiRTFM in the channel.
The problem is that most people leave if it's not very active.
And if no one decides to stay the channel will never become active.
The forum has quite some members, but a lot of them became inactive after a while.
I'm not sure what's causing this. Perhaps busy life (school, social life, etc.), or just losing interest.
That also does not help to create an active community.

Your best bet would be to join channel ##C++ on irc.freenode.net
It's very active, but only for questions and discussion about standard C++
Most of the times there are plenty of people willing to help noobs as well.
Just don't stray from standard C++ and post code using codepad.org
I'm there too from time to time and antiRTFM too I believe.

Did you ever figure out how to replace the AJAX chat with IRC?
