I think you should just include IRC Java applet into this phpbb forum (btw. is this 3. or 2. version of phpbb?)

still no good: this isnt my site so i cant host the necessary files for those to run

if there were any way to embed an IRC client into a forum-post (much like embedding a youtube clip) that would be awesome
